X-Fi
Xtreme Fidelity |
 |
|
Today's PC
motherboards usually come standard with integrated audio
devices which are sufficient for listening to
music or playing games. As built-in audio is becoming more
popular and more powerful (like Intel HD Audio)
discrete PCI audio cards are becoming an optional device
for some people. However, for those who are serious audiophiles, gaming enthusiasts, or home studio engineers,
a dedicated sound card is the only real choice for
true clarity, performance, and extra features. These
are the people who will love Creative's latest
audio invention. What is it, you ask? |
|
 |
Creative announced
their latest innovation on August 8, 2005 and it
is called the Sound Blaster
X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity. The X-Fi Xtreme
Fidelity is a completely new single chip
architecture. The processor supporting 24-bit
quality, stunning audio clarity with a minimum
of 110db SNR and the new CMSS® (Creative Multi
Speaker Surround) 3D headphone and surround
speaker technology. In addition new
enhancements, new features, and programmable
software to drive the X-Fi into the future of
high end audio for music, entertainment, and
games. The X-Fi technology is a very complex
architecture so this article is an overview to
some of the key elements such as the X-Fi
processor, new audio processing, and software
modes. |
|
|
Xtreme
Fidelity Processor
According to Creative,
the Xtreme Fidelity Engine is like having the power of a
second 3.4GHz processor (more than 10,000MIPS) built
into the PC that was dedicated just to audio! That's
enough additional power to process more than 10 Billion
instructions per second!
Like the GPU in a video
card, which is designed to process only graphics, the
X-Fi processor is design for only one purpose -
processing audio data in real-time This in turn frees up CPU
resource for other instructions improving overall system
performance. Dissecting the X-Fi
processor core we discover that X-Fi consists of
51,100,100 Transistors, 1,613,658 Logic Gates, has a
.13-micron @ 1.2V core, a clock frequency of 400MHz, and
processing 10,340 MIPS.
The X-Fi engine consists of
four key elements:
- The Audio Ring
Architecture
- Super Sample Rate
converter (S-RSC)
- A "Quartet" DSP
- On-board RAM up to
64MB
|
|
The Audio Ring Architecture
-
The Audio Ring Architectural is a very
flexible topology, wherein each processing
elements can take audio data off the ring,
process it, and place it back on the ring. The Audio Ring is a time division
multiplexed bus that supports 4096 internal
audio channels, where each channel has a
deterministic bandwidth and latency, and
capable of playing up to 127 simultaneous
voices. Channels are also needed for the
internal signal paths of the reverbs,
dynamics processors, and special effects
processors.

|
X-Fi S-SRC (Super
Sample-Rate Conversion)
- Sample rate
conversion plays an important role in digital
connectivity, 3D audio modeling, music synthesis and
the ability to play and mix multiple sounds recorded
at differing sample rates. SRC is process by which
audio's sampling rate gets changed without affecting
the pitch of the audio. The X-Fi Sample Rate
Converter engine is incredibly powerful at over
7,000 MIPS equivalent processing power and has a new
and unique hybrid architecture that produces
outstanding audio quality. In fact the quality of
the sample rate conversion is so high that it is
effectively transparent. An audio clip could
actually be converted many times with no detectable
degradation.
|
"Quartet" DSP (Digital
Signal Processor)
- This all-new patent
pending DSP architecture has four hardware threads,
which why it is named the "Quartet" DSP. The Quartet
architecture is also SIMD, (Single Instruction
Multiple Data), which included two SIMD execution
data-paths, doubles the X-Fi throughput and
efficiently support stereo and complex data types.
|
X-RAM - Xtreme
Fidelity RAM
- Standard
implementations of X-Fi-based cards will
ship with 2MB of onboard memory, while
high-end offerings will have up to 64MB.
The top-end Sound Blaster X-Fi solutions
(Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS and Sound
Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro) comes equip with
64MB in size and can only be used for audio
purposes. The sound card memory purpose is
to store audio files that would otherwise
take up space in system memory and eat up
CPU time if compression is used. The memory
will also let the cards support up to 128
simultaneous voices or distinct sounds, and
provides the following opportunities: to
save the main memory, to accelerate access
to memory, to avoid real time decompression,
to avoid sample quality deterioration, to
increase graphics performance and FPS.

Audio
Processing Technology
X-Fi audio processing
technology featuring some powerful new enhancements
such as 24-bit SoundFont, EAX Advanced HD 5.0, SuperRip, ASIO 2.0, Dolby Digital EX, and DTS. What sets X-Fi
apart from competitors are the two audio
processing technologies: 24-bit Crystalizer and CMSS-3D. |
|
 |
The 24-bit
Crystalizer technology can transform
16-bit stream into full 24-bit audio by
analyzing the data and restoring all the
information that was originally removed when the
audio was compressed to 16 bit in the studio. Enabling the 24-bit Crystalizer
through the
software menu, MP3s and CDs songs became more
vibrant and audio CD can be ripped from original
16-bit to 24-bit with the help of CMSS |
|
|
 |
CMSS-3D
is actually a collection of several
different algorithms which use HRTF filters
to simulate room reflections to create
a surround-sound effect from a stereo
output on headphone. CMSS-3D does the
same for a two-speaker system (without
the virtual room reflections). For 5.1
speaker system, CMSS-3D can up-mix a
stereo recording up to six channels to
make sure the speaker system doesn't go
to waste.
CMSS-3D
virtualizes a sound source of any
channel to any device and thus provides: |
|
-
CMSS-3DHeadphone:
surround sound in headphones
-
CMSS-3DVirtual:
surround sound in stereo speakers
-
CMSS-3DSurround:
converts stereo into multi-channel
sound
-
CMSS-3DInteractive:
3D sound from several sources

The Three
"Mode" Architecture
X-Fi technology uses a
"mode" architecture is to harness and focus all the
incredible power into three key audio uses (Gaming,
Entertainment, Audio Creation). With three
programmable optimization modes to choose from this
technique eliminate user the hassles of spending hours
of time configuring for sound quality when playing
games, listen to music, or audio project. Each mode
behave differently from one another but it's guarantees
to enrich sound quality, even from low-quality to
high-quality audio.
Here is a chart

Storage Technology Update |
| Next Generation Data
Storage, Backup and Recovery Devices |
|

From small companies to large
enterprises, modern businesses run on information and most companies
collect unique and valuable data such as customer and product
databases, research and design (engineering) files, email, and
office files that are critical to operations. Without continuous
availability to this critical information the business cannot
function.
The real problem today is that too
many small to medium businesses do a poor job at protecting their
data. Important files are either scattered all over the network or
on a single server that has no real data protection. Fault tolerant
RAID is a good starting point but the simple fact is that even a
server with fault tolerant hard drives cannot protect data in all
cases (a major server crash, for example, can corrupt data) and may
lead to costly downtime. The best practice is to combine internal
RAID arrays with removable or external backup options such as tape
drives, backup servers, NAS devices, external storage enclosures,
and so on.
An investment in data security will
always payoff in the long run potentially saving thousands in lost
downtime and productivity. True data protection mean continuity of
business operations and is not about a single product but rather a
strategy of combining the right product solutions and practices for
a given organization. System integrators and resellers need to be
aware of this and offer the best solutions to their customers. |

Network Attached Storage
(NAS) Devices |
| Why choose NAS? NAS devices are
storage devices attached directly to your network. NAS devices offer
the ability to expand capacity at will without need to build a new
server, they are easier to setup and more cost effective than adding
a separate server box to your network (including taking up less
space and using less energy).
NAS devices come in different forms
such as "cube", tower, or rackmount and provide an easy way to add
storage and backup capacity without needing to build and license a
separate system. They connect to the network through standard RJ-45
cables and act as any network device plus will have some form of
embedded operating system interface. NAS box itself often includes
multiple hard drives that can be setup in a RAID for fault tolerance
(RAID 1, 5) or RAID 0 for performance. NAS devices may be referred
to as IP Storage appliances due to the fact the connect to your
network using an IP address, unlike internal storage devices or
direct attached storage devices that use USB, SCSI, etc, to connect
to an existing system.
ASI offers small to medium business
NAS devices from Infrant and Thecus and home office or small network
devices such as the Western Digital NetCenter or Netgear's Storage
Central.
Infrant ReadyNAS RN600

servers and printer servers and use Gigabit Ethernet ports for fast
connection to the network.
The RN1000 (ReadyNAS 1000) is a 1U
rackmount version with similar features. ReadyNAS devices are
manufactured by Infrant (www.infrant.com).

SAS (Serial Attached
SCSI) Technology |
| SAS is the next
generation of SCSI technology. Designed for the enterprise market it
represents a major leap forward with a design that will allow for
higher performance, higher capacity in less space, easier cabling
and backplane requirements, and overall greater scalability for all
types of critical storage needs.
SAS
bandwidth is starting at 3GB per second speed and will eventual
scale to 6 and 12 GB/sec for exceptional performance potential. SAS
devices are just starting to make an appearance on the market so we
offer an introduction here to how it works and what devices will be
available.
Serial Attached SCSI is a
point-to-point architecture, distinct from parallel technologies in
which devices are connected using shared-access topologies such as a
Fibre Channel arbitrated loop of the SCSI bus. It a serial,
self-clocking, full bandwidth communication protocol with dedicated
device bandwidth and the ability to combine port bandwidth.
SAS also uses a backplane that
accommodates both SAS and SATA drives (though it is not recommended
to mix them together), and you can cascade backplanes using edge
expanders (expanders are needed to allow an HBA port to talk to more
than one drive). Host bus adapters (HBAs) have access to all ports
on an expander including other HBAs, allowing backplanes to be
chained together for easier storage expansion.
Cabling requirements for the Serial
Attached SCSI (SAS) interface are able to be met using thinner
cables with smaller connectors. This permits improved routing,
airflow and cooling within systems using the serial interface. As
well, the electrical complications and cross talk usually associated
with the larger parallel cabling are reduced. SAS technology permits
universal connection between SATA and SAS drives to ease
configuration and improve hot swap capability.
SAS Hard drives
There are both 3.5" and 2.5" SAS
drives. The 2.5" drives offer lower power consumption (up to 30%
less) and allow higher density storage applications critical for
enterprise use. Supermicro is the first major server vendor to offer
SAS based servers, mobile racks, and controllers and in partnership
with Fujitsu. Fujitsu 3.5" SAS drives will start at 36.7 GB, 73.5GB
and 147 GB capacities, while the 2.5" models will be launched at
36.7GB and 73.5GB and run at 10K RPM. Fujitsu SAS hard drives
will be available from ASI through Supermicro, other brands should
also be available in the near future as SA market grows.

Sony AIT Tape Drives |

Sony has a new generation of high
performance AIT tape drives with enough models to fit any company's
backup requirements. Sony AIT technology has many advantages over
competing tape formats.
Chief among these advantages are:
Small Form Factor with High
Capacity. The AIT format was developed to handle the capacity
requirements of data-intensive applications in a compact 3.5-inch
drive form factor, making it an efficient, cost effective storage
solution that saves valuable IT real estate.
Helical-Scan Technology Increases
Recording Density and Reliability. The Sony AIT drive
employs a helical-scan recording style in which data tracks are
written at an angle relative to the edge of the tape. This provides
higher density recording, enabling Sony customers to lower media
expenditures and increase efficiency by storing more data on a
smaller amount of tape. Helical-scan recording also reduces the need
to rewind the tape cartridge as frequently, thus reducing
wear-and-tear and increasing reliability.
Memory-in-Cassette (MIC)
Architecture Enables Fast Access to Data. MIC technology puts
information about the contents and capacity of the tape in a
non-volatile memory chip embedded in the tape cassette itself. Using
this information, the tape drive can position the tape at high speed
to write or read data in an accelerated manner.
Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME)
Media Provides Increased Reliability and Capacity. AME media
represents the culmination of over 50 years of Sony innovation and
experience in magnetic tape technology. Supporting higher recording
density than other types of tape media, AME also reduces buildup of
debris and static electricity, further extending the useful life and
reducing the chance of recording errors when using AIT tape.

Ultimate PC Game Gear Guide! |
|
When it comes to high end PC hardware, nothing
remains the same for long. What used to be a top
of the line component will now get you laughed
at when you show up at your local LAN party.
We'd like to do what we can to help you avoid
the embarrassment of showing up to the "frag-fest"
with a less than optimal system... the rest is
up to you.
The latest 3D action games such as DOOM 3, Half
Life 2, Far Cry, Counter Strike, and many more
can really push a system to the limits
especially if customer wants higher frame rates,
higher resolution, and greater game detail and
realism than they have experienced before. As a
system builder if your customer wants great
performance and immersive gameplay you need to
get the right hardware for them. However
choosing this hardware and staying within a
certain budget is not easy because all
components must be balanced. This guide is
intended to show you the best current selections
for resellers to build for their customers
Performance Categories:
To make it easier
to compare these PC components we have been
divided in two levels:
-
Power Performance
Gamer - High
performance, extremely fast but still
affordable for the dedicated PC gamer
-
Extreme Performance
Gamer - For
the enthusiast who wants a custom system and
for whom money is no object!
Product Categories:
We will take a look
at the six hardware categories that most affect
gaming performance and user experience. We are
considering a stand alone gaming system, online
or LAN gaming must also consider connection
speed:
- Video
Card - 3D accelerator video cards have
the greatest single impact on game performance and
money invested here is a major part of a game
system budget so it is a critical choice for
the system builder.
ASI carries brands such as EVGA, Asus, XFX,
Sapphire, ABIT, PNY, XGI, and many more.
-
Processors - Next to the video card the
CPU and memory has the largest influence on
3D game performance.
- Memory
- Memory is critical to system performance
and you must consider both RAM speed and capacity
and of course the stability of the system.
- Hard
drives - Your hard drive's access time
and buffer size can seriously affect how
fast games can start, load new maps and data
into memory, and save open game data. They also
impact how fast the operating system and
virtual memory will work.
-
Motherboard / chipset - The
motherboard's chipset and features such as
expansion slots and memory controller
greatly determine the type of gaming system
you can build and overall system
performance.
- Audio
System - The sound system does
not greatly affect the speed of the game
(software based sound controllers will use
up more CPU cycles) they can definitely
affect the user experience. Under-powered
speakers will make a exciting game sound
weak, great speakers will make you jump out
of your seat!
- Display
Monitor - Why spend a lot of money on
great video card if you have a ten year old,
14" CRT display? Many of the 3D games today
can be displayed in resolutions up to
1600x1200 so why not take advantage of this?
-
Networking Components - The majority of
today's top games have some form of online
play enabled within them. Find out what you
need to take advantage of this at a hardware
level.
- Chassis
(case) -
While once considered a convenient place
to store components, the PC case has become
both an integral part of the computer
cooling system and a method of expressing
personal taste for some people.
The real trick,
of course, is to balance all these components
together to make a good system with a given
price range. You should be able to do this by
choosing most parts from within the same
category. You can get a good idea of the
relative 3D performance of your system using a
benchmark software like 3DMark. |
|
Video
Cards |
|
Ready
for some action? A power gamer today
really needs video cards with PCI
Express x16 interface
(huge amount of bandwidth) but if
they still have AGP 8x motherboard
that can work as well. Cards in
this category would normally range
from $150 up to $500 or more and
offer more powerful, cutting edge
graphic processors but also extra
software and game bundles that add
value to the package.
Recommend in this range are NVIDIA
6800 and 6600 series, ATI X800/850
series video card, all the way up to
a single
Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX (currently
the fastest single card solution
available for 3D gaming). With any
of these cards you can blow away
space aliens faster than you can
click your mouse!

SLI Video Cards |
If
one video card is good then two must be better, right?
Dual is cool, and true extreme
gaming today means running not one
but two PCI Express x16 video cards
together in a special combined
processing mode now possible using
either NVIDIA's SLI technology or
ATI's new Crossfire technology.
Both
technologies require specialized
motherboards with dual PCI-Express
slots and chipsets that support the
new technology. Both can improve
performance dramatically over a
single card by combining their
graphics rendering capabilities.
Like dual CPUs, two video cards can
split the graphics rendering and
then recombine the results for
faster processing of intense 3D
scenes. Between NVIDIA and ATI there
are several different rendering
options available, some that users
can control and choose themselves,
others that have been preset by the
manufacturers into gaming profiles
which have been lab-tested to insure
the best quality gaming experience
for the user.
Here
is a list from NVIDIA of SLI
compatible hardware:

Processors (CPU) |
|
As the
driving force of the PC, consumers
really only have two choices when
selecting the CPU which will power
their gaming monster. AMD and Intel
are the only real players in the CPU
game. While there are other
manufacturers such as Transmeta and
Motorola, none of them are even in
the realm of what the big two are
capable of doing. Thankfully for all
of us there are two major CPU
manufacturers going head to head to
beat the other in performance and
market share,
because if there was no competition
we might still be playing away on 166MHz
processors. Competition
is good for everyone, especially the
consumers. AMD
has recently introduced it's Athlon
64 X2 series of processors, the X2
designating their new Dual Core
Architecture. AMD's dual-core
desktop processor has been turning
heads in the PC world for it's
remarkable benchmark scores and
overall gaming goodness. Basically,
the Athlon 64 X2 is the desktop
version of the AMD dual-core Opteron
Server / Workstation CPU which
should work in many current
motherboards with only a BIOS
upgrade needed to make it work
correctly. The difference between
the Opterons and the new X2
processors being the hyper-transport
links (the X2 only has one since
it's designed for single socket
systems while the Opteron has 3).
Intel
has stepped into the dual-core
desktop market with the Pentium
Processor Extreme Edition, also
known as their 840. With dual-core
architecture, hyper-threading, and
64bit extensions, it is apparent
that Intel has decided not to pull
any punches in the high end gaming
market.
Pentium Processor Extreme Edition or
the AMD Athlon 64 X2 are the
recommend dual-core processors that
reign supreme over their single core
counterparts. Both have extreme
performance and top of the line
benchmark numbers due to dual cores,
large cache sizes, and performance
optimizations. Dual core CPUs will
allow you greater overall multimedia
and multitasking enjoyment out of
the system.

Memory |
For
gaming performance to be realized a
minimum 1GB total memory running in
dual channel mode is required (this
means two 512MB matching memory
modules). 2GB would be ideal for
intensive gaming purposes. Kingston,
Corsair, and Crucial are all good
brands with proven track records of
reliability and stability. Special
memory kits are available which
include matched pairs of high end
memory including Kingston HyperX or
Corsair XMS2 series memory modules.
Corsair has just introduced the
XMS-3500LL PRO memory that, in
conjunction with the new ASUS
A8N32-SLI motherboard, deliver the
ultimate overclocking and
performance combination.
Top
Extreme Gamer / Power Gamer picks:
SKU 40945 -
1GB Kingston HyperX 667MHz. DDR2
(2x512MB) (KVR667D2N5K2/1G)
SKU 41179 -
1GB Kingston HyperX 675MHz DDR2
(2x512MB) (KHX5400D2K2/1G)
SKU 38924 -

SKU 30548 -
1GB Corsair XMS2 675MHz DDR2
(2x512MB) (TWIN2X1024-5400C4)
As
with most things you will find in
computing, more is better. 512MB is
the bare minimum that we recommend
for anyone running Windows XP, for
gamers that should be bumped up to
1GB minimum. If you have the means,
2GB is probably what you should aim
for in a serious gamer rig. This
will provide generous amounts of RAM
for your game to play with while
allowing Windows overhead to use
whatever it needs without getting in
your way. |
|
Hard Drives |
|
A power
gaming system must have decent hard
drives, SATA 7200RPM is the minimum.
Western Digital Raptor hard disks
(featuring 10K RPM speeds) or
jumping up to the new SATA 2 drives
(3GB/second) is a much better
option.
While
RAID arrays used to be the exclusive
domain of servers and workstations,
many high end desktop systems now
take advantage of the speed and data
protection offered by multi-drive
systems. Using striping on your
drives (RAID 5) offers high speed
read and writes and fault tolerance
for all of your data.
While
requiring 3 disks at a minimum might
seem to be a bit costly,
the cost of data recovery is much
higher.
The
phrase "speed costs" used to be used
mainly in the automobile world, but
in the past few years it's become a
mainstay in the computer industry.
Without the outlay to purchase the
high end hard drives with large
cache and as many as needed for your
RAID array, you'll quickly find your
storage system to be a pretty
significant bottleneck in your
gaming rig.

Chipsets |
|
A
quality motherboard with a
performance chipset is highly
recommended. For those that support
the latest AMD 64 or Intel P4 LGA
775 processors, look for the Intel
925x, 955x, or NVIDIA nForce4 SLI
(or the new nForce4 SLI X16)
chipsets. PCI-Express X16 graphics
support is important for a good
gaming experience, SLI mode for
multiple video cards is critical if
you want your PC to be king of the
hill among other gamers.
Top Extreme Gamer Picks:
On
the High end of the chipset spectrum
is the NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset,
(which can be used on the Intel or
AMD platform motherboards), and the
Intel 955X chipset. The NVIDIA
nForce4 SLI now comes in two
flavors, the standard SLI and the
SLI X16 which, at introduction, was
strictly a Dell only option, but is
now making it's way to other
motherboard makers. The X16 option
offers two X16 lanes for the SLI
video cards which gives you full
blown SLI support, which is
something that hasn't been
available. With many SLI capable
setups currently available, you are
only actually getting X16 speeds if
you use a single card, it gets cut
in half if you're running SLI. While
X8 PCI-E is still pretty sweet, true
X16 bandwidth on both cards will be
a welcome sight.
The
Intel 955X chipset also makes an
impressive choice for gamers. With
it's proprietary Memory Pipeline
Technology (Intel PMT), the 955X
delivers enhanced system level
performance by allowing higher
utilization on each memory channel.
Dedicated data paths and specialized
arbitration allow the data transfer
between the PC processor and the
system memory to be increased
resulting in extreme gameplay for
the user. With features such as
PCI-Express X16, Matrix Storage
Technology, and High Definition
Audio (Intel HD Audio) support, this
chipset is rich in features and
saves the user money by not having
to invest in a high end soundcard
since it's already available
onboard.
ASUS
has taken full advantage of the
power of the Intel 955X chipset with
their P5WD2 Premium / WiFi-TV
Edition motherboard
(ASI SKU
- 37883). As part of
the ASUS AI Life series of products,
the P5WD2 Premium board is designed
to bring lifestyle and personal
computing together. Integrating your
computer into your digital
entertainment world with functions
like TV, FM radio, and WiFi all
together in one easy to use package,
access to your digital media has
never been easier.
Intel, not to be outdone, has
produced the D955XBK motherboard,
(ASI SKU
- 37347), which
features support for the newest and
most powerful Intel CPU's (up to
1066MHz system bus speed), up to 8GB
of DDR2 system memory, Gigabit LAN,
and Intel HD Audio (just to name a
few features). A fairly impressive
software bundle comes with the
D955XBK board, which hasn't been a
strongpoint for Intel in the past,
but with the digital media age here
to stay, I think that they are
making a good decision in doing so.
Make no doubt about it, even though
the Intel package for this
motherboard doesn't scream it, this
motherboard has "Gamer" written all
over it. 7.1 Digital surround sound,
massive memory support, 1066MHz
FSB... you can't really ask for
anything more. For those BTX fans
among you, Intel also makes this
motherboard in a mBTX form-factor,
the D955XCS,
(ASI SKU - 38907).
Top Power Gamer Picks:
For
power gamer, the Intel 945P chipset
is still a great choice. While being
a bit more friendly to the wallet,
motherboards based on this chipset
still include great features like
Dual-Core 533MHz - 1066MHz FSB CPU support,
Hyper-Threading, Dual-channel DDR2
support, PCI-Express x16 interface,
Intel HD Audio, improved Matrix
Storage Technology, and SATA 3G
support. You don't get SLI
support with this chipset, but for
the gamer who wants to play, but
doesn't want to go broke doing it,
this isn't the most important
feature anyways. |

Display |
Size,
features, and response time are
important things for gamer to look
for in an LCD. The preferred size
for gaming should be at least 19"
and it should
have both Analog (RGB) and DVI
inputs.
Response
times are critical for the gamer
because without very quick response,
there is a good chance that your
games will experience ghosting.
Ghosting is a phenomenon which
strikes LCD users with less than
optimal response rates. During game
play the user will experience
vertical lines, or a trail behind
objects going across their screen
when quick movements cause the
action to change faster than the
pixels are capable of changing
colors. Lower response rates help to
control, or eliminate this entirely.
16ms or less is recommend. The lower the response rate, the
better for gaming.

ViewSonic LCD VP231wb 23.0" Widescreen LCD Monitor 1920 x 1200 250cd/m2
Black (Thin bezel)
The most exciting monitor for gaming use would be this
huge 23" ViewSonic model. Total
immersion and high levels of realism are possible for this versatile
monitor that is geared toward video professionals but perfect for
any application. Yes it is expensive but the
experience will speak for itself when using a high-end widescreen 23" LCD with
1920x1200
native resolution (non-interlaced),
250-nit brightness, a 500:1 contrast
ratio, and
12ms response time.
While not the lowest response time it
overwhelming makes up for this by
sheer size and picture quality.
On top of this it
supports an
ultra-wide 176º viewing angles
(horizontally and vertically), multiple HDTV resolutions,
analog RGB and digital DVI-I inputs, and
can reproduce rich images with vivid color and sharp text. The
ultimate monitor for anyone!

make this a serious gamers monitor.
Another very good choice for the
avid gamer is the
ASI SKU
40510 -
Viewsonic VP930B 19" LCD,
While the 8ms response time
is slightly slower than it's new
sibling, the VP930B still shines
with it's 1000:1 contrast ratio and
it's 250-nit brightness level. With
an ultra thin edge bezel, this is
the perfect monitor for those who
intend to run multi-monitor set-ups.
The same Amplified Impulse
Technology that is in the new VX924
also is included with the VP930B
which increases grayscale transition
speed for superior motion video and
gaming capabilities. |

Networking |
Networking
devices are also very important when
online
gaming using a LAN or over the
internet. Any lag in your setup can
result extreme chaos while playing
multi-player games. Things move very
quickly in online play, and if your
packets don't keep up you cannot win
the game.
D-Link offers the Industry's first
dedicated gaming router.
The
wireless 108G Gaming Router, the
DGL-4300 (ASI SKU # 37105),
with "GameFuel" technology was
released at the end of last year,
and has been gaining steam ever
since. "Game Fuel?"What initially
sounds like a drink from SoBe is
actually a proprietary technology
which automatically prioritizes
gaming packets over other network
traffic and also fragments data
packets into smaller chunks so it
can be sent out quicker.
Uninterrupted,
latency-free gaming is what every
online gamer dreams about, and now
it is truly available.
Featuring four 1000Mbps Gigabit
Ethernet ports and wireless
connectivity up to 108Mbps, this
router helps you game at full speed,
no matter how you're connected. In
addition to being the ultimate PC
gaming router, the DGL-4300 has also
been optimized for use with both the
XBOX and the PS2.
I
also wouldn't bet against seeing
some future improvements to insure
that your XBOX360 and PS3
experiences are simple and lag free
as well. |

Thermaltake
silver "Armor" case - ASI SKU 35760
(or black - ASI SKU 35754)
While
it stands to reason that everyone
who owns a computer must own a
computer case, things have changed
in the chassis business over the
past several years. What once was
just a necessary place to house your
PC components is now a statement on
your PC savvy and an integral part
of the computers cooling system. It
is very important to have a good
case that will cool all the
components, TAC 1.1 (thermally
advantaged chassis) certified cases
are the best, plus the combination
of high quality third part heatsinks
such as those from Thermaltake,
Vantec, or Zalman. Special "mod"
cases may also be purchased or
customized.
A few
examples of the high quality cases
that ASI carries for it's customers
come from Thermaltake.
One
of Thermaltake's newest additions is
the "Armor" VA8000 series chassis.
While being designed
for ATX systems, Thermaltake also
offers the BTX option for those
opting to go to the newer form
factor. The unique design of this
case is apparent at first glance
when you notice the metal wings, (or
flaps), on either side of the case.
This feature not only looks really
cool, but has the added function of
protecting the front of the case.
The drive bays sport mesh grills on
the front of them to increase
airflow through the chassis, so
protecting these covers is a pretty
necessary thing to do. The case is
fairly good sized, sporting 13 drive
bays, enough for any power user.
Cooling is handled very efficiently
by the use of the 3 included fans, a
120mm fan in front and back, and a
90mm fan on top.
Thermaltake silver "Shark" case -
ASI SKU 32813 (or black - ASI SKU
32812)
Another
popular choice for a gaming case is
the Thermaltake Shark case. Slightly
smaller than the Armor chassis, the
Shark sports a mere 12 drive bays,
(5) 5.25" exposed, (2) 3.5" exposed,
and another (5) 3.5" hidden. A very
aggressive exterior is highlighted
by some cool hidden blue LED's and
the interior is built with the
assembler in mind. |

Power Supply |
A top of
the line power supply will guarantee
a stable current feed to the higher
end components that your system is
comprised of and the components will
be getting enough power to perform
as they were originally designed to.
With today's high end video cards,
multiple hard drives, and optical
drives, the demands placed on the
power supply have grown dramatically
over the past few years. While you
used to be able to get along by
using whatever happened to be
included with your system case, now
many case manufacturers are choosing
not to ship cases with power
supplies at all. Giving the builder
more freedom to choose what they
feel is needed for the situation
allows better systems to be built
with the flexibility that is
demanded by today's gamer. Antec,
OCZ, and NSpire all offer high
wattage power supplies good for
gaming systems, many with special
cooling and connector features.

Conclusion |
|
While
the vast amount of high-end computer
hardware can seem daunting at first,
ASI is always here to help you
configure your dream system. Many
manufacturers are realizing the
value of the high end gamer market
and are beginning to create some
really strong products to fill this
formerly niche market. Don't let
your competitors get the lead in
what appears to be a growing market
segment. |
