|
On June 21st, Intel launched its next generation desktop chipsets, the
925x (Alderwood) and 915P/915G (Grantsdale).
These are the successors to the extremely popular 875/865 series
chipsets for Pentium 4 and Celeron D processors in the LGA775 package.
For Intel, the new chipsets mark an important technology conversion from AGP
8X to PCI-Express x16 for graphics cards with a 4x bandwidth improvement
to 8GB/s, DDR moving to DDR2 533MHz, I/O moving from PCI to PCI-Express x1
with a 3.5x bandwidth gain to 500MB/s. There are now 4 onboard SerialATA
ports with enhanced RAID 0/1 flexibility called Intel Matrix RAID as
well as enhanced onboard 7.1 audio called Intel
High-Definition Audio on some board SKUs. Intel's 3rd generation onboard
video called Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is found on the 915G
chipset with DirectX 9 hardware acceleration, 4 pixel pipes and support
for up to 224MB of shared video memory.
