Microsoft Recommended System Requirements

MEMORY: 256 MB of PC133 Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) is recommended.

HARD DISK: 4 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space required for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system. Total hard disk capacity for non-mobile systems should be at least 60 GB. Total hard disk capacity for mobile systems should be at least 30 GB.

DRIVE: A DVD-compatible drive is required, and the Media Center computer must have built-in “Designed for Windows XP DVD playback" MPEG/DVD decoder. The DVD drive must read DVDs at 4x and CDs at 16x speed.

GRAPHICS CARD: 64MB graphics card using DDR with 4x AGP and Direct X 9 support (recommended to have "Designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition" logo).

DISPLAY: A minimum of 1024 x 768 pixels for a 4:3 aspect ratio and 1280 x 720 pixels for a widescreen aspect ratio is recommended.

OPTIONS:

  • The Media Center computer must include a V.90 or higher, 56K modem and 100BaseT or wireless (802.11b) network adapter
  • A connection to the Internet is required and can be made through 100BaseT Ethernet, 802.11b wireless, 56K modem or integrated broadband modem. This requires that both modem and Wired Ethernet (or Wireless Ethernet) connections are supported for certain markets. End users need the ability to connect to the Internet to collect program guide data
  • Hi-Speed USB is a requirement if it is necessary to support a video capture device through USB. Otherwise, USB 1.1 is the minimum requirement
  • Implementing the modem in software is discouraged due to unpredictable behaviors and processor peak usage that may have adverse effects on the performance of Windows XP Media Center Edition functionality or multimedia or gaming applications
  • Wireless implementations of 802.11g are recommended instead of 802.11b when they become available
  • To support the phone call notification feature of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, use a TAPI 3.1-compliant, caller-ID-capable modem
  • To enable users to transfer large media files easily, at least one high-speed port (greater than or equal to 100 megabits per second) should be present.
  • TV tuner card (recommended to have "Designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition" logo)
  • Media Center remote control (recommended to have "Designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition" logo)
