RoHS Mandates–Get the Lead Out
The RoHS Directive bans the use of six hazardous
materials. The materials are four metals: lead, cadmium, hexavalent
chromium, and mercury; and two brominates flame retardants:
polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).
RoHS is difficult to interpret in some instances because
it sometimes refers to another document, the Waste in Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive that is being
implemented differently by member countries of the E.U. The fact
that the PRC operates under one government makes it more
likely that country will produce a simpler, easier-to-interpret
directive.
Restriction on the use of Hazardous Substances and the Waste Electrical
and Electronic Equipment Directive (RoHS and WEEE)
RoHS restricts the use of the following SIX
substances.
Cadmium,
Hexavalent Chromium, Lead, Mercury, Polybrominated
Biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated Diphenyls
Ethers (PBDE)
